The Survival Guide

Precatious

In today’s society crimes have gotten worse.  There are people lurking in the shadows just waiting for their next target.   You have to be defensive everywhere you go, always precautious and always needing to observe your surroundings.

Keep in mind that you also have a personal defense, your voice.  Criminals do not want to attract attention while they are trying to take away your valuables, so you can probably use your voice and body to scare away your attacker just by making as much noise as possible and create commotion. This is our world; we all have the right to be safe.  Do you feel safe?  A police officer pulled over an elderly lady for a traffic stop for a busted headlight, the officer asked for her license and she pulls out a concealed carry permit.  The officer asks are you armed and she replies yes I have a .357 caliber pistol as well as a knife in my pocket, a .45 caliber automatic in my glove box, a 12 gauge shotgun and an AK47 in my trunk.  The officer looks at the frail elderly lady and asks her “ma’am what are you afraid of?” Lady says “absolutely nothing”.

Additionally, daily crime statistics are also listed for Tennessee as well as national figures. In Memphis, TN the total number of daily crimes is 2.08 times more than the Tennessee average and 2.58 times more than the national average. Violent crime statistics in Memphis, TN are 2.84 times more than the Tennessee average and 4.67 times more than the national average. Regarding crimes committed against personal property, Memphis, TN has a daily crime rate that is 1.92 times more than the Tennessee average and 2.26 times more than the daily national average.  Source: The Memphis, TN crime data displayed above is derived from the FBI's uniform crime reports for the year of 2015.

Here are some daily tips for survival

  1. Take a self-defense class or learn martial arts

People have to learn to protect themselves in any means necessary.  There are several different types of classes that you can take including: kickboxing, karate, Aikido, Jiu-Jitsu and many more.

  1. Here are some basic safety rules
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Look for exits or routes of escape
  • Keep your cell phone and keys in your front pockets; do not stop a thief from taking your purse. If you wrestle them for it, you could get injured.
  • If someone is following you do not proceed to your car. Cross the street and proceed to the nearest populated location where you can call for help.
  • Avoid taking shortcuts through unknown parts of town or in dark alleys. Change your running or jogging route every few days to avoid potential followers.
  • Avoid public transportation after dark, if you are on a bus at night, sit in a row close to the driver. If you are on a train, sit in a populated car near the exit.
  • If someone attempts to kidnap or grab you, scream for help at the top of your lungs. While laws vary by state, use the maximum amount of force permitted by law to escape.
  • Always lock your home doors and your car doors.
  • Never stop to “help” children.

I know, this tip sounds cruel.

But recently, criminals have been employing a new and dirty trick.

In secluded areas of the highway or back country roads, they are leaving covered car seats alongside the road. When someone, usually a woman, stops to help the baby, the woman is either abducted or her car stolen. If you notice a small child or a car seat along the roadside, call 911 and do not stop!

  • Don’t Panic

Whatever you do, when faced with any kind of danger, emergency, or scary situation, don’t panic.

Stay calm!

The situation will more than likely get worse if you freak out.

If you must freak out, freak out on the inside, but remain calm on the outside and do what needs to be done. Have you ever been in a situation that called for extra safety measures? If so, how did you cope?

  1. Invest in emergency equipment / self-defense gear

There is also equipment that you can carry for any type of emergency.  Safety whistles, pepper spray(http://www.deltasurvivalist.com/collections/self-defense-spray ), knives(http://www.deltasurvivalist.com/search?q=knives ), flashlights (http://www.deltasurvivalist.com/collections/flashlights  ) and much more.  There are several belts that can create the perfect armor and carry for your defense equipment.  Delta Survivalist has it all and much more!   http://www.deltasurvivalist.com/

Following these steps increase the chances of not being a victim tremendously, but they will fail if you don’t follow the most important rule of all: Be aware of your environment!

What are some of the steps you have taken to feel safer when out and about?

Plan for Your Risks

Emergency preparedness is not only for Californians, Midwesterners and Gulf Coast residents. Most communities may be impacted by several types of hazards during a lifetime. Americans also travel more than ever before to areas with different hazard risks than at home. Knowing what to do before, during and after an emergency is a critical part of being prepared and may make all the difference when seconds count.

Situational Awareness

One of the things that is so chaotic about emergencies, including criminal acts like home invasions, riots, and other disasters like tornados, floods, power outages, or even a SHTF event, is that they are unpredictable. They often come out of nowhere and the situation is made worse by the fact that most people panic.
